Exploring Abroad: Yes, Versailles Really Is Incredible!

Edd:  We’d read lots of articles about how fabulous Versailles is, and devoted a full day to go check it out during our stay in Paris.

Cynthia:  A 45-minute train ride took us directly into Versailles. Since the Palace gets all the attention, we knew nothing about the town itself. As soon as we arrived, we were impressed with the lovely architecture and cobbled lanes.

E:  And zero graffiti. Yay! We found ourselves in the midst of a cute Saturday farmer’s market and an irresistible bakery. Believe everything you’ve heard about French pastries, folks. They are the best!

C:  From town the Palace is only a short walk away. According to our research we chose the absolute worst time to visit—a summer weekend. But honestly, the crowds weren’t that bad.

E:  Inside the Palace I had to constantly remind myself this was an actual residence where people once lived. Everything—the size of the rooms—the ceilings, chandeliers, and furnishings—the artwork—is so over the top it’s mind-boggling.

C:  After being blown away by the interior of the Palace we stepped outside to a total OMG moment. Can you believe these gardens?

E:  What’s even more incredible is that pic is just a “small” side portion of the overall grounds. Here’s the section directly behind the Palace that looks like it extends forever. The entire space covers around 2000 acres. More than twice the size of Central Park.

C:  We wandered for hours down manicured corridors of hedges that revealed all sorts of surprises. Statues, vases, and fountains were everywhere. And despite all the weekend visitors, we sometimes found ourselves alone in one of the many enclosed groves.

E:  Musical Fountain Shows take place every weekend and they are spectacular.

C:  The finale reminded us of the Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas just on a much grander scale. Water exploding everywhere! What an ending to a remarkable day.

E:  So, yes, Versailles really is that fabulous. And the lovely town with its proximity to Paris has now unexpectedly found a spot on our list of possible future retirement locations. Who knew??

C:  From here we head to London, the most visited city in Europe. And one of the most expensive, so no possible budget retirement there. This last stop is an anniversary gift to ourselves. Come celebrate with us next time!
